At last David Cameron has come clean and warned us what ordinary people would face under a Tory government.  His cold and heartless statement that the recession provides a good opportunity to cut public spending says it all.  Not only has he no real interest in the plight of ordinary people in these difficult times but it confirms that a Tory government under his leadership would immediately attack the achievements that have been core values for our Labour government and for the millions of hard working ordinary people in this country.  It is now clear that Winter Heating Payments, Tax Credits, the National Minimum Wage and public sector jobs would be the first targets of a Tory government along with trade union rights for key public sector employees.  We have worked so hard to improve life for the vast majority of people in our country and we must now fight equally hard to stop the Tories turning back the clock to the days of Thatcher.

The Norwich North bi election should act as a warning to us all.  When the Labour Party starts arguing amongst itself then the only beneficiary is the Tory Party.  When the Tory Party benefits, all but the privileged few become worse off.  This isn’t an old fashioned socialist rant but a statement of fact.  We are faced with a Tory government that will cut Surestart in order to cut Inheritance tax and the only party that can stop them is our Labour Party.  Locally, we have the experience, enthusiasm and determination and, over the coming months, we must put all differences aside for the greater good.  Every member and supporter is valued for any contribution he or she can make and I look forward to working alongside you in the most important General Election in a decade.
