Lord Bill McKenzie visited Tendring on the 3rd of April 2009 to launch the Labour-Government funded free swimming for under 16s and over 60s. Tendring is one of a very few district councils to take on this funding for two years to enable the under 16s and over 60s to swim for free in any TDC owned swimming pool. This not only gives the best opportunities to young people but also to the pensioners, allowing them to keep fit for a good price - free.
Bill and Ivan then went on to have a meeting with local pensioners before then going on to the Clacton campus of Colchester Institute where Bill was shown the latest tools in plumbing by students.

After launching free swimming, Lord Bill McKenzie and Ivan Henderson popped in to Active4Life group - 180 local pensioners all using aerobics to keep fit. Pauline Edmonds, chairman of Active4Life, was delighted to welcome Bill and Ivan and even got them using a Step Board with some of the members.
