Ivan Henderson was one of the MPs who voted to bring in the UK’s first ever National Minimum Wage and he is delighted to see it celebrating its 10th birthday.Ivan Henderson says “At the time we were facing fierce opposition from the Conservatives who claimed it would cost a million jobs. Not only was this untrue but the minimum wage has greatly boosted the incomes of so many local people who were previously being paid a pittance.” Ivan was a staunch supporter of bringing in the National Minimum Wage as he knew that seaside resorts were particularly vulnerable to low paid, seasonal employment and women were often the victims of extreme low pay. The National Minimum Wage immediately improved this situation and has now provided a safety net for ten years. “I am very proud to have been the local MP at the time and to have voted to bring in the minimum wage,” continued Ivan Henderson. “It’s another good example of this Labour government having made a genuine difference. People may now take it for granted but they should not. There are already voices on the Tory benches calling for it to be abolished or frozen and we must do everything necessary to ensure the minimum wage lives to be 100.” For further information please contact Garry Calver on 01255 551940 |
